Il romanzo è manifestamente autobiografico, perché riguarda la storia dell’autore e della sua famiglia dal 1950 al 1970, ma è anche a sfondo storico, perché parla delle grandi trasformazioni che hanno interessato l’Italia in quel periodo anche se gli avvenimenti narrati si riferiscono in particolare a Sassari, città in principio solo agricola, divenuta poi polivalente e provvista di servizi per il territorio.
